The H1N1 Generation

Wash your hands, and wash your face,
Before the virus finds a place
To make a home, and live, and grow
And multiply, before you know.

You just now pushed the “copy” button,
And true, you were your eyes a’rubbin’?
Now all you have to do is sneeze,
And viruses will fill the breeze!

But meanwhile, Billy blew his nose;
The tissue, in the trash it goes,
But he himself goes to the door,
And spreads the viruses some more.

You touch your phone, and touch your mouse,
Then put your fingers to your mouth,
The viruses are trading places,
“Maybe we will see new faces!”

Your cough you cover, like a pro,
But with your hand—and then you go
Up to the door and turn the knob,
Leave viruses—a whole, big gob.

They’ll then rub off on Sally’s hand,
About a hundred thousand grand!
She rubs her eyes, and rubs her nose,
And many a virus with her goes!

Then she starts the coffee pot,
And soon another source you’ve got,
‘Cuz Harold likes his coffee, too,
And Jane, and Sam, and even Drew.

They didn’t even give a thought,
Just pressed the lever on the pot.
Aha!—another nice, warm place,
To multiply the H1 race!

Hachoo! She sneezed, but never mind—
She is so generous and kind,
Releasing presents in the air—
Her neighbors, do you think they care?

And then, as is her job, she presses
Many buttons, then assesses,
All her results, with the exception
Of the H1 generation.

Success! The viruses all say,
We’ve had a super-duper day!
We’ve ended up just everywhere—
And no one even seems to care!

Let’s multiply, and rule the world!
No matter if our hosts we’ve killed,
We’ll just move on and keep mutating
New possibilities creating!

But –SWISH!—a disinfectant wipe,
Took half the crowd with a single swipe.
Hand sanitizer took the rest,
The viruses were in arrest.

Doorknobs, and buttons, everywhere,
Were wiped, because, oh yes we care!
We’re on the warpath, overcoming,
The spread of viruses—it’s stunning!

One or millions, do they know,
They don’t have anywhere to go?
John and Sally, Drew and Billy,
Washed their hands till they felt silly!

Then disinfected all their stuff,
Until they’d really had enough.
No sneezing—wait! Your blew your nose!
Now wash, clear down right to your toes!

Doorknobs and buttons all got wiped,
And even coffeepots were swiped.
And everyone just washed their hands—
Just constantly, you understand!

No viruses could find a place
To really multiply the race;
They’d find a seemingly good spot,
Then someone disinfectant brought!

They couldn’t get from mouth to breeze,
Or really anywhere they’d please;
No one touched their eyes or nose,
Then buttons, keyboards, knees and toes.

Their pathways were all washed and wiped
Faster than the speed of light.
Soap and water, common sense,
Has put all H1 on defense.

Use all your weapons! Wage the war!
From phones & buttons to the door.
Fingers, don’t you wipe my nose—
Without some soap and a fireman’s hose!

If I rub my eyes, I hope I’ve washed!
…and all the virus paths kaboshed.
And I really promise not to sneeze,
Unless—oh, pass a tissue please!

Hachoo! So generous I’m not,
Because some bug I’ve surely got.
I’ll cover, wash, and wipe for you—
So you for sure won’t get it, too!
